Anogyra,
Cyprus
On the island of Cyprus, ancient Anogyra is an unspoiled
traditional stone-built village that has about 300
residents, a third or so of whom are expatriates. With
its cobbled streets, wonderful family winery and carob trees,
this handsome hamlet completely charms.
The Nation of Cyprus
Cyprus is an island located in the eastern
Mediterranean and joined the European Union in 2004.
It is a highly developed, modern nation and has been a part of
the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Empire and the British
Empire. In 1964, it gained its independence, but in 1974,
it was invaded by Turkey. Today the Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus, located on the northern one third of the
island, is recognized by no country except Turkey.
The 1974 Turkish invasion dominates much of Cyprus' politics and
continues to create disputes between ethnic Greek Cypriots and
Turkish Cypriots.
