The World Has Yet to Discover Delightful Salinas, an Affordable Beach City in Western Ecuador

X
Salinas (population 30,000) is the western most city on the coast of Ecuador and is a tourist destination with a pretty half moon bay and a developed infrastructure.  Once a salt mining town, these days Salinas caters to wealthy Ecuadorian beach vacationers and sport fishermen.  Tall, white apartment buildings line the sandy beach while the village itself stretches inland.  The water is warm year round and beckons to anyone seeking a laid back yet modern seaside retirement.

Salinas' main road, which follows the bay's curve, is dotted with enticing shops, restaurants, night clubs, pubs and high-end hotels with casinos.   This is a lively place during the high season (December to April) when parties are in full swing.  The beach fills up with a colorful assortment of umbrellas, families, couples and a few expatriates.  On the other side of the road, however, it is quieter and more residential.  The beach (Chipipe Beach) is clean and well kept, but there are no shops or boutiques, just glistening sailboats and motorboats moored behind the upscale Salinas Yacht Club.

Few foreigners have discovered Salinas yet; so far it still seems to be a well-kept secret.  It is off the beaten path, roughly two hours from the closest international airport, and the road to the city travels through some unattractive brown scrub, caused by the mixture of salt and sand in the soil.  The entrance into town has dirt sidewalks and small houses, which may deter some potential buyers.  Once past all that, though, the scenery changes.  The beach and modern buildings come into view and beautiful Salinas stretches before the eye.  The city is not booming, but it is growing and has a healthy tourism-based economy.

Since the outside world has not yet descended, real estate is still relatively inexpensive. Average condo prices run around $75 to $100 per square foot USD for a home right on the sand with uninterrupted ocean views.  Modern, luxury 3 bedroom, 2 bath apartments (condos) with 1,420 sq. ft. just back from the beach are also for sale starting at around $100,000 USD (and going considerably higher).   Go to www.thebestofecuador.com/phoenix.htm for more information and pricing.

To become an expat retiree in Ecuador and receive a pensioner visa, you must provide documented proof that you have an income of at least $800 USD per month, plus $100 USD more per month for a spouse or dependent.   A retirement visa will grant you nearly all of the benefits of an Ecuadorian citizen.  If you do not have a pension, a $25,000 USD real estate investment or bank CD deposit in-country will suffice.  You do, however, have to live in-country for 9 months in each of the first two years you are in Ecuador.
