Stunning Vistas and Peaceful Living Bring Expat Retirees to Secluded Panamanian Mountain Village

X
Sorá, Panama is a small mountain village (elevation 1,200 to 3,400 feet) about an hour and a half (by car) west of Panama City (population 1 million) and is an appealing retirement spot for several reasons, including its natural beauty, mountain views and relatively cool climate   This peaceful spot is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, but it has also been somewhat "discovered," and real estate prices are rising rapidly.  Still, deals can be found.

Sorá has a police station, a few small shops and a couple of restaurants, but a 7,000-acre, gated housing development called Altos de Maria is the reason many expats come here (although as many Panamanians as expats live in Altos de Maria).  Lots and homes are for sale; prices for lots start at around $45,000 USD, and small single family home prices start in the $100,000s USD, but homes in the $200,000s USD and higher (into the $600,000s) are more common (and many look like Swiss chalets or Spanish colonials). Broadband Internet, Direct TV, paved roads, maintained nature trails, a community center and a swimming pool with a natural waterfall are some of the amenities found here.

Keep in mind that Altos de Maria imposes some regulations on home buyers.  Owners must install septic tanks; homes must be three stories or fewer and have red tile roofs, and wire fences are not allowed.  Concern for the environment and quality of life are important here, so there are plenty of green spaces (even a community greenhouse) in the development, and homes are not clustered together.

And for anyone thinking of making a trip to Sorá, a private owner named Frauke has some delightful furnished cabins for rent.  Price for a week's stay is $420 USD, and a month is $720 USD.  His website is http://www.viviun.com/AD-34901

Expats will also be glad to know that San Fernando Hospital, with a primary facility in Panama City, has just opened a state-of-the-art medical clinic in Coronado, about 45 minutes by car from Sorá.  It has a 24/7 emergency room and will be a major asset to the community of Coronado and smaller surrounding communities like Sorá.

The climate here is nearly perfect with temperatures between 70° F and 75° F during the day and about 15° F cooler at night.  It's humid (Panama gets a lot rain) but less so than on the coast and in Panama City.   This is a truly beautiful region, sprinkled with magnificent waterfalls, rolling rivers and thick jungles, and it is quite possible to spend a day hiking or horseback riding and not see another human being.  Some of Panama's best beaches are just 45 minutes away, as are casinos and restaurants whenever more of a taste of modern civilization is needed.
