Real Estate Deals in Uruguay

The Province of Rocha

X

Want to Really Get Away from It All?   Come to Rocha, Uruguay!

X
Uruguay, a small country tucked away in the south eastern section of South America, first saw European explorers in 1536 and for years was a contested land as the Spanish and Portuguese sought to expand their territories.  Today, though, Uruguay is a peaceful constitutional democracy, and rural Rocha (population 25,000), the country's easternmost coastal province, is an area sprinkled with pretty seaside villages that are rich in history and culture.  It's also a place off the beaten path, and while real estate is not dirt cheap, one's money tends to go further here.

For example, in the town of La Paloma along the coast, not too far from the capital city of Montevideo, four small, completely renovated beach cabins, three of which can be used for rental income, are for sale for $250,000.  Further inland, $300,000 will fetch a four bedroom, four bath villa with a separate, detached building for a maid or gardener.  In the village of Costa Azul, we found a three-bedroom, two bath house with ceramic and wooden floors, ocean views, mature landscaping and a path to the beach for $200,000.  There is also a two bedroom, two bath house with maid quarters for sale for $95,000.  Real estate can be found for much more, too.

Rocha is sparsely populated and has some beautiful beaches, many of which (but not all) are practically vacant.  There are towns so rustic and laid-back that they do not have electricity.  One such place is Cabo Polonio, a bohemian seaside village that is only accessible by foot or dune buggy.   During the summer, sea lions come to sun themselves on the smooth rocks near the local lighthouse, and dolphins race through the peacock-hued water.  For any retiree seeking a true escape from modern life, this is a place to consider!

Uruguay is often called the least corrupt country in Latin America and is characterized by an educated, prosperous middle class, a stable economy and first-class infrastructure (except for the towns with no electricity).  Spanish is the official language, and beef and lamb, often grilled, fried or stewed, are the main dishes.  The climate is warm and temperate.

To search for Rocha real estate, go to Google or Yahoo and use the keywords "rocha uruguay real estate," "rocha uruguay homes for sale" or "rocha uruguay properties."   Real estate is not plentiful so it pays to keep looking.
